Toubkal Massif

Its not always sunny up at Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountian.  I took these shots while stuck in a hide for 3 days & nights waiting for one of the National Park's four Bearded Vultures to come and feast on my bait of goats' legs.  Needless to say none of them ventured out in such miserable weather, but I did manage to catch up on my reading.

We are keeping up the feeding station so hopefully I will be able to have another go over the next couple of months.

Palais Jamai Fes

Earlier in January we went up to Fes to take some new photos for the Sofitel Palais Jamai.  The legendry hotel was orginally a private palace built in 1879 and the hotel preserves much of its original Moorish architecture as can be seen in our image of the Moroccan resturant.

The hotel also has a unique commanding view over the ancient medina which we captured in the panoramic sunset shot at the top.

Winter Fashion

One of our favourite places to do winter fashion shoots is the resevoir at Lalla Takerkoust, just south of Marrakech.  The combination of winter sun, light off the water and the Eucalyptus trees provides a very diferent type of image than the one we normally associate with Morocco.

This shoot was for a French label showing at the Paris Prêt à Porter Show "Who's Next 2012" and features Marrakech model Sonia Kabbaj.

Tea Time Magazine

We are delighted that Hoffman Media have used Alan's photos in an article, in the Jan/Feb issue if Tea Time Magazine, about our friend, Jonathan Sims, and his wonderful Tea Embassy located in the historic downtown area of Austin, Texas.

The shop is an oasis of calm serving an amazing array of teas with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a beautifully restored period house dating from 1872.  Defintely a place to visit on any tour of the city.

And they do mail order as well from their great website!

KBO Organic Garden

The Kasbah Bab Ourika Organic Garden is fast becoming a thing of legend here in Marrakech.  Since the hotel's management has been taken over by husband and wife team, Amanda and Fouad, the garden and restaurant menu have been transformed.  Fouad, an international chef born in Moulay Idriss, and his New Zealander wife are both huge enthusiatists about organic food, gardens and good eating. And in just one year you can see the results!

The KBO organic garden is not just a vegetable plot but is a thing of beauty worth visiting just for itself. Laid out in raised beds, all the plants are well labelled and the varieties of chilies, tomatoes, spinach, salads and herbs is astounding.  Every morning the kichen staff, headed by Fouad, visit the garden to consult with the gardeners, pick the day's vegetables and plot future menus.  While the houskeeping staff visit the luxuriant rose garden to pick fresh flowers for the rooms.

The results on the menu are obvious to see.  Home made pestos, harisa and unique sauces of all kinds. Vegetables and salads that you will not find on any other menu in Marrakech.  It is hardly surprising that the hotel was included in the Fodor's list of 100 best hotels in the World, making it into the best Luxurious Retreats category.

Mohydine Itani

Mohydine Itani is a young Moroccan musician in Marrakech.

Mohydine has set up his own recording studio at home and is about launch his first CD of Classical Moroccan music preformed, recorded and produced entirely by himself.  Determind to live his dream he is working in a supermarket to finanace everything.

We think that Morocco with a talented, creative and determind young generation, like Mohydine, is assured of a bright future.  This is what the Arab Spring is all about and the older generation like Alan, who are in a position to do a little something to help, have a responsibliity to do what they can to help make their dreams come true.

The Capaldi Hotel

We've also been back to the new Capaldi Hotel to photograph their suites, some of which have their own private pools.

This is going to be a really nice hotel!

Located just beyound the Lalla Takerkoust, on the edge of the Agafy Desert, it has great views and big enough grounds that there are plenty of places to explore.  They've also hired a terrific French chef so it will quickly become a favourite excursion from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sofitel Casablanca

Still Images have had a long relationship with the Sofitel chain in Morocco.  Many of the Sofitel Spas are decorated with Alan's now famous sepia photos of Morocco and we have been doing publicity shoots for the Sofitel Essaouira for some time now.

Our latest job was to create the first photos images of the new City Centre Sofitel in Casablanca.  It is still under construction and is due for delivery in the summer of 2012.  Being built near the port it is Casablanca's second tallest building (after the Twin Centre) and is going to be a modernist spire with fanatastic views over the port and the city all the way to the Grand Mosque Hassan II.

Our external view of the Accor Group City Centre complex comprising of the new Sofitel, Novotel and Ibis needed a bit of drawing in Photoshop and we used NikSoftware's Color Efex Pro to give the image a bit more drama.

RVZ Rental coming to Marrakech

Alan took part in the "Rancontres Professionelles" (professional meet up) at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Visuels de Marrakech (ESAV) this week, where he meet up with mostly film professionals across the region and Francophone Europe.  At the meet up were also students and staff from the ISAMM, the Tunisian Art Institute, and ALBA, the Academie Libanaise Des Beaux Arts.

However perhaps the biggest delight for us was to meet Evelyne Madaoui, owner of RVZ Rental, a very big film and photography rental house in Paris.  They were at the conference because they will be setting up a equipment rental branch located in the school itself from January 2012.  The rental will be open to students and professionals based in Morocco and photographers coming here to do location shoots.  As this is a first of its kind it really will become an important address for all those production companies that want to organise photo shoots here in Morocco.

RVZ rents out mostly Profoto and Elinchrom lighting and all types of photography equipment (Hasselblad, Canon and Nikon), and although they will only be starting with a limited range here in Morocco, it is a huge step for professional photography in the country.  If you have any particular needs they are happy to ship down specific equipment if they are given enough warning.

You can contact RVZ here.

Still Images has its own plans to launch a series of workshops - hopefully starting at the ESAV - combined with a small equipment hire (here we think we will be concentrating on mostly US made lighting such as Photoflex and Paul C Buff) and a sales department (RVZ are not in the sales business).

We think together we will really help make some changes in Morocco for both local photographers and visiting shoots.

Royal Mansour Hotel Marrakech

The Royal Mansour Hotel website is now live and features some of the work that Still Images has been doing for them, notably in the three bedroom Riad.

We are now looking forward to the publication of their brochure which will also feature some of our photography of Marrakech and Morocco in general.

Amel Bouchoucha - Darb Jnoun

Yala Music have just launched their new Amel Bouchoucha video, Darb Jnoun.  You can watch it here.

The film was shot at the beginning of the summer in Marrakech at the Palais Mehdi.

Executive Producer Pierre Grigoriantz asked Still Images to be involved.  Alan Keohane was commissioned to be the Lighting Director and Terry Munson shot the publicity stills.

You can see a selection of Terry's photos on the Yala Music website.

The video features international Flameco star Amador Rojas from Seville.

The filming was done over two nights and was quite a challenge.  Not only did we have to light 5 different sets but the temperatures were over 40 degrees centigrade even in the middle of the night!

It was also an interesting experience to work with a truck load of massive HMI, Tungsten and Kino Flo lights and manage a team of grips and electricians.  Not quite the same as using our portable, but powerful, Elinchrom studio flash, which can all fit into the back of the van and be managed by a couple of assistants!

Luckily Alan is a master planner and he prepared for the filming by drawing up detailed floor plans of each of the locations and worked out not only where all the lights should go ahead of time, but also which lights should be moved where and when each time we struck one set to build another.

It would not have been fun hauling hot and heavy lights around without knowing where exactly you are going with them!

Marrakech

In what has been a very busy 2 months we've also been out and about in Marrakech in the searing heat looking for new images of the magical city for the Royal Mansour Hotel.  Above a few of the more famous historic monuments.

Toubkal National Park

Still Images over the years have worked alot taking photographs for the Moroccan High Commission for Water and Forests, who are responsible for Morocco's National Parks. Alan's photography skills, his love of landscape and nature and his extensive knowledge of Morocco's mountains and deserts makes him uniquely qualified for this kind of photography.

Alan Keohane as a young art school graduate in the 1980's and early 1990's worked as a trek leader in Morocco as a way of supporting his early photography.  As well as leading treks in the High Atlas, Jbel Saghro, Anti Atlas and Jbel Sirwa, Alan would also make is own photography treks, often only accompanied by Mohammed ben Brahim and his mule sometimes for weeks, on end, to areas not visited by commercial trekking.  This lead to his first book "The Berbers of Morocco" and it was a natural progession from there to go off to the deserts of the Middle East to do his second book "Bedouin, Nomads of the Desert".

These most recent photographs of Aoudad or Moufflon à Manchettes in French, (Ammotragus lervia) were taken as part of a project to not only help promote the Toubkal National Park but also to help income generation for the running of projects within its boundaries.  The project, with financial help from the GTZ, the Swiss Foundation - Mountain Propre - and private industry is part of a very exciting combined plan that has the full support of the regional Governor.  If sucessfull the plan will see some real improvement in the park's infrastructure and amenities.
