Tangiers Portraits

We've already posted some of the portraits of brothers, Nao and Mons Abegay, who make up the Tangiers rock band Lazywall.  So it is about time we showed you a few of the other portraits that we shot during our Tangiers Studio Portrait Project in February.

At the top is our portrait of young psychologist, Kaoutar Touzani, who this year published her first volume of poems in Paris.

Below our photo of Kaoutar is Maryam Touzani, Kaoutar's big sister, who is a journalist and now celebrated director of the award winning short film "When They Slept."  Maryam's first film has been a huge hit on the international festival circuit including recently the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen, Germany.

Second from bottom is the unique, and hugely talented, designer Salima Abdel-Wahab.  Salima is so much more than just a fashion designer as the clothes she creates are more like works of art than garments.

Finally is celebrated actrice, Siham Assif. star of films such as "L'Amante de Rif"  et "Les Yeux Sec" directed by Narjiss Neffar.

Alan Keohane was delighted to be asked to provide the photography for the CD Cover and booklet art, and the fabulous graphic design is by talented Danish artist Maria Tran Larsen.
Bliss's first album was "Quiet Letters" released in 2003, followed by "No One Built This Moment" in 2009.  They also provided the music for the Disneynature film "Wings of Life".

Marrakech Atlas Etape

Last Sunday, 28th April, saw the first ever Marrakech Atlas Etape, a challenging charity cycle event from Marrakech to Oukaimeden in the Atlas Mountians.  The event was organised to support one of Morocco's most impressive charities, Education for All, that helps school girls from rural famillies.

Nicknamed the "Ouka Monster" because of its massive climb, it certainaly lived up to its name.  Temperatures dropped by more than 20 degrees centigrade from the day before and the mountian swathed itself in freezing cloud.  Of the 150 cyclists that took part only about 60 made it to the top.  Even fewer made it back down.  Several cyclists had to be taken off the course by ambulance suffering from hypothermia.  It was billed as an event for the serious amateur or professional, and no mistake it is a very challenging climb.

Terry Munson and Alan Keohane, from Still Images, were the official photographers on the event, and went up the route on quads.  Even so we nearly joined the ranks of the casulaties.  We  got so cold we could barely hold our cameras never mind frame a shot!  But despite the discomfort it was a great experience to share with all the cyclists and the camaraderie was fantastic.

To everyone who took part, and those behind all the amazing organisation and logistics, you all, young, old, amateur and professional, have our unbounded admiration.  We look forward to meeting you all again next year!

Danica Cosic Design.

Danica Cosic is a native New Yorker and designer that produces a range of beautiful handmade leather bags and belts collaborating with crafts men and women in Morocco.  Craft people like Zineb, who hand embroiders some of Danica's bags.  Zineb lives in Tougana, a small rural village outside Marrakech.  Danica also works with a women's collective and with traditional leather craftsmen in the old city of Marrakech.  Much of the work on the bags is done entirely by hand, without machines.

As you can see Danica's products are beautiful!

Danica is a finalist in a competition for small businesses in New York.  If she wins she will get a grant of $10,000.  This will help her, and the crafts people who work with her, develop the business and secure more orders.

Charity Art Auction for Street Kids in Marrakech

Last Saturday was the charity art auction at the fabulous La Mamounia in aid of street children in Marrakech.

The auction was organised by the Associations Eijkam and Al Baraka, along with the Janelly and Jean-René Fourtou Foundation.

More than 40 Moroccan and international artists contributed work for the auction including some well known names like Mahi Binebine, Karl Lagerfeld and Yahya Creation, as well as some of our favourite artists like Philippe Deltour and Nourreddine Chatr.

Alan Keohane was honoured to also be asked to participate and donated this architectural print of Riyad el Qadi in Marrakech.  The print had an estimate price of 2,000 MAD, but to our great delight eventually sold for 15,000 MAD (£1200)!

The aim of the auction was to raise money to build a refuge for street children that would act as a home for 15 children, as well as a day centre for up to a further 80 kids, that will be run by 5 qualified full time staff.

You can find out more about the project by visiting the Association Al Baraka and the Fourtou Foundation websites.

The prints are limited to a total edition of 25 for each image and are available in two sizes:

The photographs are on acid free Hahnemühle 308 Photo Rag and are printed with Piezography's pure carbon based pigment inks, guaranteeing a very high archival quality.  All the prints are numbered and signed in pencil and have Alan's personal embossed stamp on the border proving authenticity.  You can find out more about his Original Prints on the website www.alankeohane.com

While in Samburu we stayed at the fabulous Larsens Camp which was worth the trip in itself.  The camp is beautifully run by the manager, Jeremy, and his team, and the tents and location are superb.

Our ace safari guide was Joshua.  Not only is he immensely knowledgable but he also has an uncanny knack of always positioning his vehicle to get the best photography light on the animals.  If you are planning on a photography trip to Samburu - Joshua is the man you need to have with you!  Ask for him when you book at Larsens.

Some Holiday Panoramas

Here are a couple of panoramas from our New Year journey in the south of Morocco.  They are from Riad Hida in Ouled Berhil near Taroudant. Jo and I have visited the hotel several times and love its atmosphere of faded glory.  It was once a Pacha's palace and is now run as a hotel staffed by the ex employees of a deceased Danish doctor who was the last person to use the house as a private residence.

In doing the shots I deliberately didn't move a thing - just shot the panoramas as I found them.  The old salon was being prepared for a wedding when I did the interior image.  The complete antithesis of the highly stylised hotel photos that we do professionally.
